One Pink Door

Not everything in your home has to make sense to everyone else.

My daughter's bedroom door is pink.

Not because I love pink.

Not because I'd recommend interrupting a hallway of black doors with a bright splash of color.

And certainly not because it's the "designer's choice."

It's pink because I love my daughter.

The days we spent on the paint aisle, looking through color chips while she carefully debated every shade of pink, are sweet memories I hope she remembers for a long time. We laughed. We negotiated. (Yes, there were a few definite "no's") We carried sample cards home, painted test swatches, and celebrated when we finally settled on the one.

That little project wasn't really about paint.

It was about telling a little girl, Your ideas matter.

It was about giving her the confidence to make a choice.

About letting her feel seen.

About creating a memory together that cost very little but meant everything.

As someone who spends much of my time analyzing and helping people curate beautiful spaces, I know the pink door doesn't make perfect design sense.

If I were evaluating the house purely from a presentation standpoint, the pink door would be a definite friction point. A cohesive hallway of black doors would be calmer, more timeless, and more cohesive.

But homes aren't museums.

They're where childhood happens.

They're where personalities grow.

They're where memories quietly accumulate in ways no perfectly curated space ever could.

Sometimes the most meaningful design decisions aren't the ones that photograph best.

They're the ones that tell your family, You belong here.

One day she'll grow up.

The pink door can be painted over in an afternoon.

But this season—when she's excited to show everyone her room, when she still wants to help pick paint colors, when she thinks having a pink door is the coolest thing in the world—is fleeting.

I don't want to miss it in pursuit of perfection.

Sometimes that means keeping the handmade pottery.

Sometimes it means displaying your child's artwork.

Because not everything in your home has to make sense to other people.

Sometimes it only has to make sense to the people you love most.

And since that's the case...

I'd choose the pink door every time.
